The University of Hasselt ( Hasselt Universiteit or or UHasselt ) is a Belgian university based in Hasselt and Diepenbeek. The University is a member of cross- border higher composite ALMA.

History

The university was founded in 1971 under the name of Limburg Universitair Centrum ( LUC ). In September, 1973 the company was included in the subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, dentistry and medicine on campus Diepenbeek. The University was one of the beginning 322 students and had 24 academic teachers.

As of 1991, the Economische Hogeschool Limburg was incorporated as a Faculty of Applied Economics at the University.

Through close cooperation with the Dutch Maastricht University was established in 2000, the Transnational University Limburg ( tUL ), a transnational university that is still housed the absence of a separate campus in the rooms of the universities of Hasselt and Maastricht.

2002 founded the University of Hasselt, Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg and the Hogeschool Limburg the Xios the Associatie Universiteit Hasselt.

The name of the LUC was amended on 15 June 2005 in Hasselt University.

Since 2012, a second campus exists in the center of Hasselt (Faculty of Law and Principal). Through a partial fusion with the universities PHL and XIOS originated in 2013 two new faculties at the University of Hasselt (Engineering Science, art and architecture), thus increasing the number of students of the University increased to 5500.

The University Today

Today the University has about 5,500 students, 687 employees in the academic field and 298 employees in management and technology (state of the employees prior to the merger with Xios and PHL).

Rector Prof. Dr. Luc de Schepper is, vice - rectors are Paul Janssen and Jean -Michel Rigo.
