History

In the 17th and 18th centuries existed in Konstanz briefly a university. The offshoot of the University of Freiburg was (now the Administration of Justice on the Lower arbor ) housed in Lanzenhof and was in the years 1686 - operated 1715 - 1698 and 1713.

Today's University of Konstanz was founded in 1966 as a reform university. In the early years it was housed in various buildings in the city center, was opened on the Gießberg to 1972 the campus with an area of 90,000 square meters. The logo of the university was created in 1980 by Otl Aicher.

On the establishment of institutes was omitted in their place came immediately ( less than usual tailored ) faculties and departments, should develop the teaching of research. In order to overcome the boundaries between subjects better, the concept of a campus university was taken from the Anglo-Saxon, and administrative and service facilities such as cafeteria and library were centralized. The reform projects, the relocation of large parts of the doctrine of lectures in seminars or tutorial groups and following it was the concept of the course examinations.

Was conducted as a pilot experiment in the 1970s and 1980s, the stage of legal education in the practice phase and the study were closely interlinked. Initially, there was also the Social Science Basic Studies in which management scientists, economists and lawyers were trained together.

After many of these projects were leaked, "invented" the university due to the proposals of the Commission Mittelstraß entirely new: Since 1999, the university is divided into three sections in which the 13 departments are encouraged to greater cooperation. The existing faculties and departments were resolved in favor of the departments, the duties of the faculties within the meaning of the State Higher Education Act henceforth meet the three sections. Was maintaining the consistent centralization of service facilities. The open around the clock library In particular, in all the books are freely accessible, is a well-known feature of the University. It is, however, expected to be in October 2015 only limited use, since a substantial refurbishment is further become necessary parts since November 2010 as a result of exposure to asbestos.

Since 2012, library, computer center and to improve services in a common Organsisationseinheit "Service composite Communication - Information - Media ( KIM ) " bundled.

The future concept of the university with the title " Modell Konstanz - towards a culture of creativity " was adopted in the framework of the Excellence Initiative on 19 October 2007. In addition, there are currently five special research areas in operation, and the " Research for young researchers " came across nationwide interest, following the university was dubbed by the media as " Mini Harvard on Lake Constance ". Statutes are published in the official publication of the university, where they set came into force at.

Finances

The student body has for the LHG their own financial autonomy, being subject to the supervision of the Court of the country and a specific test method.
