The University of Leoben ( Leoben, Leoben, MUL ) is Austria's only School of Mining and Metallurgy.

Its features include the interdisciplinary interwoven fields of study and the strong internal cohesion, which is also a consequence of their small size and the old squire traditions.

History

Montana University was founded on November 4, 1840 by Archduke Johann in front mountain as " Styrian - corporative mining establishment ". One of the first teacher and first director was mining expert Peter Tunner. This succeeded to enforce the state takeover of the school and the transfer to the near town of Leoben district, where the company was incorporated on November 1, 1849.

In 1904 with imperial decree renamed the " University of Mining " and the award of PhD law - which they had assimilated the technical universities. In 1934, an organizational merger with the Technical University in Graz, which, however, had a slump in the study numbers result. It was repealed in 1937. As of 1955, the traditional fields of study mountain nature and metallurgy were supplemented by other disciplines. 1975 was based on the University Organisation Act renamed the " University of Leoben (MUL ) ".

The still -standing use in neo-baroque "old building " the MUL was posted on October 22, 1910, inter alia, in the presence of the kk Minister of Public Works, August Ritt (1852-1934), put into operation. The additions from more recent times date from the year 1970 and renovations were on 4 November 2009 after 15 months of renovation and grand opening. Especially by the sharp increase in recent years, the number of first semester students, there was an urgent need for larger lecture halls. Here also, the university sports center got its own premises.

With the 3015 regular listeners MUL listed at the end of the Inskriptionsfrist for the academic year 2010/2011, a historic high of students.

The research in Leoben is based on the value chain from raw materials, primary and materials to the finished component or system. The core areas of Mining, Metallurgy and Materials will be complemented by cross-sectional areas as the basic science subjects, the environmental technology as well as the operation and economics. This close co-operation with industrial partners are maintained.

A few examples:

  • At the core of the mining sector ( raw materials extraction and processing ) Leoben Mining engineers work in the large EU project TUNCONSTRUCT (41 partners from eleven countries ) with, to make the European tunneling and the maintenance of efficient and economical. Focus of Leoben scientists is to explore different propulsion methods on the stability of the cavity.
  • Scientists from the core region metallurgy developed a new apparatus for measuring the temperature of slag, with the purity of high-grade steel, which is used in the aerospace industry for use, could be improved. This allows the electro-slag remelting process - to reduce energy consumption while increasing productivity.
  • Leobener material scientists explore the foundations for novel thin hard coatings for tools that are independently harder, work -lubricating and can heal itself. In this way layers are to be developed, the tools can be almost as hard as diamonds.
  • Environmental engineers have developed a method to use heavy-metal- containing residue from flue gas desulphurisation of refinery operations as a nitrogen reducing agent in cement production can. This resulted in a cooperation between two industries that brings both environmental and economic benefits.

In all its research activities sought the University of Leoben, to maintain the global contact with the scientific community and expand. This is also reinforced by the two at the MUL settled centers of excellence Materials Center Leoben Polymer Competence Center Leoben, in which it is involved.

In June 2007, the MUL has changed its corporate identity. The above eingblendete logo is now only the seal and the TripleM logo was replaced by the new MU logo.

Studies

Many of the courses of study offered, mostly converted to the Bachelor and Master system since the winter semester 2003/ 04, can only be occupied in Leoben in Austria. Only the study " Applied Geosciences " there are different names in Graz ( Graz NAWI ), Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg. Another exception is the field of study " Plastics Technology ", which is also offered at the Johannes Kepler University of Linz since the winter semester 2009/10. The studies are generally divided into three portions (4 3 3 semesters). The first year is - as the input stage for orientation - the same for all, so you can move easily and with " loss of time " the study towards the end of the first year. This first year, in the scientific and technical basis will be presented, different studies in Leoben of the Austrian Universities in others. In the first study ( 4 semesters) to deepen the foundation subjects. The second section ( 3 semesters) applies the basic training in the respective field of study. Since the winter semester 2011/ 12, all fields of study are converted to the undergraduate system, they offer after the seventh semester the "Bachelor (formerly Bachelor ) " 's degree. This does not comply with § 54 paragraph 3 of the Act 2002, which provides that lasts 6 semesters of the Bachelor ( or 180 CP), and is an exception in Austria dar. In the third section ( 3 semesters), the master's program, carried out the scientific specialization with the final passage of the thesis ( degree "Diplom Ingenieur" ). Following this, a doctoral program (6 semesters) started the mont regardless of the field of study with the academic degree Doctor rerum montanarum, abbreviated as Dr.. , Closes.

Currently, the following undergraduate courses of study with various elective options are offered:

  • Industrial Environmental Protection, Waste Disposal Technology and Recycling
  • Petroleum Engineering ( " Petroleum Engineering " )
  • Metallurgy
  • Mining and Metallurgical Machinery
  • Applied Geosciences
  • Plastics Technology
  • Mineral Resources Engineering ( " mountain nature ", previously known as " Natural Resources " )

In March 2007, the Vice Chancellor Hubert Biedermann came under heavy bombardment, since now also became known to the public that he had taken in his habilitation in some parts completely from the textbook of another university professor. He has apologized in the past with the concerned author, but now the whole operation was uncovered again by the plagiarism hunters Stefan Weber and also made public.

The University denies the allegations, Biedermann will also continue to serve as Vice -Chancellor of the University.
