The University of Italian Switzerland (Italian Università della Svizzera italiana, USI) was founded in 1996 as the first public university in the Canton of Ticino and has its headquarters in Lugano and Mendrisio. Teaching languages are Italian and English. With approximately 3,000 students, it is one of the smallest universities in Switzerland and also falls by its Swiss standards extremely high tuition fees of 4,000 CHF (2,000 CHF for Swiss ) per semester from the frame.

Faculties

The university offers bachelor's, master's and executive master's degree programs as well as the possibility of a doctorate in the following fields:

  • Accademia di Architettura
  • Facoltà di Scienze della Comunicazione
  • Facoltà di Scienze Economiche
  • Facoltà di Scienze Informatiche

Accademia di Architettura

The main focus of the training is in addition to the technical aspects of the architecture profession to humanistic education. This has been pursued with a variety of specialized courses in the field of philosophy, art history, anthropology and sociology. The faculty is composed of cantonal, national and international professors and assistants. It also plays the presence of representatives of the " Ticino School " a crucial role, which shaped the modernization of the architecture in the canton of Ticino in the 1960s prevail. Important representatives of this group are also in the faculty of the Accademia di Architettura, including, for example, Luigi Snozzi, Aurelio Galfetti and Mario Botta. Also, have personalities like Leonardo Benevolo, Massimo Cacciari, Harald Szeemann and in 2009 was awarded the Pritzker Prize architect, Peter Zumthor, shaped the development of the school and also reinforced its international resonance.

Rough distinction can be made between the theoretical and practical training, both of which are also interdisciplinary linked depending on the course or workshop. The practical exercises take place in the design studio. They focus on specific topics that vary from semester to semester. The workshops are limited to 24 students and are led by a professor with the collaboration of two architects. They comprise about 50 percent of the total educational activities. In addition, the practical exercises also provide for so-called horizontal workshops of shorter duration. The focus of these primarily disciplines, complementing the design and planning, such as urban planning, ecology, etc.

The study complies with the European standards of the Bologna Agreement and is recognized in the European Union. After three years and a mandatory internship year the title " Bachelor of Arts " is obtained. In the next two years can be completed with a Master of Arts in Architecture (AAM ). For the approval of the program, both the federal and comparable foreign baccalaureate degrees or diplomas are recognized.

Directors of the Accademia di architettura were, inter alia, Aurelio Galfetti (1996-2001), Valentin Bearth (2007-2011) and Mario Botta ( 2011-2012).

Institute

In addition, the University performs the following research institutes:

  • Institute of Alpine History
  • Institute for the Study of the Mediterranean
  • Advanced Learning and Research Institute on Electronic Systems
  • Institute for the Study of Artificial Intelligence ( IDSIA )
  • European Journalism Observatory ( EJO )
  • Institute of Computational Science (ICS )

Institute of Computational Science

The Institute of Computational Science (ICS ) in the faculty of computer science of the USI was founded in 2008 and is today one of the largest institutions for scientific computing in Switzerland. In Switzerland, as well as internationally, the ICS has established itself as a center of excellence for teaching and research in the fields of Mathematical Modeling, Numerical Simulation and High Performance Computing. Director of ICS is since the founding Rolf Krause.

Cooperation partners of ICS include, inter alia, the Cardiocentro Ticino ( a company specializing in heart disease clinic ), ETH Zurich, the University of Geneva, EPFL in Lausanne and Forschungszentrum Jülich. The cooperation with the CSCS, the national high-performance computing center of Switzerland, based in Lugano - Cornaredo, the ICS allows the use of its supercomputer installations.

On ICS it is offered a separate Master of Science Program in Applied Mathematics and Computational Science ( AMCS ). The non- consecutive Master's course is aimed primarily to students of natural sciences and medicine.
