University of Massachusetts Lowell

The University of Massachusetts Lowell ( UMass Lowell short or UML) is a public university in Lowell, Mass., and one of five campuses of the University System University of Massachusetts. She is known for her specialization in management. In the fall of 2009, approximately 13,600 students were enrolled.

The Centre for Atmospheric Research designed Ionosondenmodelle the widespread " Digisonde " series and coordinates a global network of interconnected ionosondes.

History

The college was founded in 1975 after the merger of the Lowell Technological Institute and Lowell of the State Colleges. These two predecessor institutions have been 1895 as Lowell Textile School, respectively. Founded in 1894 as the Lowell Normal School. In the years 1975 to 1991 was called the University nor the University of Lowell and only then took its present name.

In June 2010, the construction of the new Emerging Technologies Innovation Center, the first academic building in 30 years, which is being rebuilt on the campus began. Construction will cost about 70 million U.S. dollars, of which the state pays half.

Sports

The sports teams of the University of Massachusetts Lowell are the Riverhawks. The university is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Hockey Mens Team playing in the high school league hockey East in Division I and wears their home games at the Tsongas Arena from. In the years 1979, 1981 and 1982, three times they could win the NCAA championship in Division II. In the rest of the sports teams of the University play in Division II also won the national championship basketball team of men in 1988, the men's cross country team in 1991 and the field hockey team in 2005.
