University of Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts designated the State University System of the State of Massachusetts and consists of the largely operationally independent from each other locations Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell and the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.

The abbreviation is variously used depending on the UMass Together Hang: It is on the one hand the official abbreviation of the name " University of Massachusetts " and can therefore refer to the entire system of universities. Also in connection with the place name of the individual sites is " University of Massachusetts " often " UMass " abbreviated (eg UMass Amherst, UMass Boston). If the name " UMass " used without a location, making a practical site or the entire system can be meant depending on the context.

In everyday parlance, but with UMass often referred to only the university in Amherst; this usage is itself maintained in other locations such as UMass - Boston. In fact, the university name is abbreviated in all locations except Amherst both as " UMass [ location ] " (eg, UMass Dartmouth ) and "UM [ first letter of the site ] " (eg UMD); at the Medical School in Worcester is spoken of in accordance with " UMass Medical School " or " UMMS ". For example, students speak in Boston from their own university often called " UMB ," in distinction to " UMass " ( = UMass Amherst ). Only in Amherst, the University is referred to merely as a " UMass " or " UMass Amherst " but not as " UMA ".
