The University of Oregon ( UO ) is a comprehensive university of the Oregon University system and is located in Eugene, Oregon. It was founded in 1876. At the University of about 23,000 students are enrolled. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities, an existing association of leading research-intensive since 1900, North American universities.

The current President is Richard W. Lariviere. The school colors are green and yellow.

History

The university was founded in 1872 by a decision of the Parliament of Oregon. The teaching began in 1876 with five teachers and 155 students. The first building of the university, which was built in 1876 historical Deady Hall was recorded on 11 April 1972 by the National Register of Historic Places with the number 72,001,082 in the registers. 1881, the university was as far in debt that they should be closed. Twice, in 1913 and 1932, in the university was planning to merge with the Oregon State University. Campus

The campus of the UO has 80 buildings as well as several sports facilities.

The area is 1.1 km ². The park contains over 500 different species of trees. During the Vietnam War here numerous protest meetings were held.

In the late 1960s there was a redesign of the campus. Students competed for participation with the transformation of the university. So were beaten track used, among others aware as a design tool. The university administration then hired the Viennese architect Christopher Alexander. According to his plan, the site was leveled between the university buildings and sown with grass. The resulting after months trails were paved paths transformed ( " Desire Lines ").

Students

Of the 23.389 enrolled students in 2010 were 53 % women and 47 % men. 2010, there were 1,750 international students from 86 countries (7% of the student body ).

Sports

The sports team of the University of Oregon are the Oregon Ducks; their mascot is Donald Duck. The University is part of the Pacific -12 Conference.
