The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University of Košice, Slovak Univerzita Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v Košiciach, is a university in Kosice in Slovakia.

History

Founded as the Old University Košice on August 6, 1660 by Emperor Leopold I by the Golden Bull of the University of Košice, which made ​​only a few years earlier, built by Bishop Benedict Kišdy Jesuit convent school to the then few universities in the Habsburg monarchy.

1773 Jesuit University was nationalized as Academia Regia and following as a result of university reform were the facilities of the University to a branch of the Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest. 1850, the Jurisprudential school became independent and existed until 1921.

In 1959, the University of Košice was recovered by amalgamation of several higher education institutions as Pavol Jozef Šafárik University of Kosice. It is named after the writer and philologist Pavol Jozef Slovak Šafárik.

In 1996, inter alia, to split the angesiedeltete in the neighboring town of Prešov philosophical and pedagogical faculties of the Šafárik University and forms since the University of Prešov.
