The University of Pune is a public university in the west of India. The 1.66 km ² large campus is situated in the northwest of Pune, the second largest city in the state of Maharashtra. The university was founded in 1948 and is one of the leading universities of India. It is divided into 52 departments and research centers, six interdisciplinary centers, 466 graduate and 232 Kolleges other recognized institutions.

Currently, the University of Pune is one of the world's largest universities with approximately 500,000 students.

History

The founding of the University of Pune dates back to Poona Act, which was passed by the Parliament of the former State of Bombay on 10 February 1948. Bal Gangadhar Kher has in his capacity as Chief Minister of Bombay contributed and Minister of Education of the Government of Bombay significant contribution that the University appropriate foundation funds and the campus has been provided.

In 1949 the university were already affiliated to 18 universities and colleges and enrolled more than 8,000 students.
