The University of the West of Scotland is a university in the West and South West Scotland with campuses in Paisley, Ayr, Hamilton and Dumfries.

The University currently has approximately 18,000 students and 1,300 staff, with a range of 100 undergraduate and postgraduate courses at 7 faculties.

In recent years, the number of international students has increased steadily (eg, a 40 % increase of Chinese students in the academic year 2005/ 06), mainly due to partnerships with foreign universities.

History

It was founded in 1897 as the Paisley Technical School, since 1992 it was known as University of Paisley. On 1 August 2007, the University of Paisley partnered with Bell College in Hamilton. On 30 November 2007, the name changed to " University of the West of Scotland " for the united new university institution.
