The University of Twente (UT ) ( Dutch: Universiteit Twente) is a Dutch University of Technology and Social Sciences in Enschede ( Overijssel) in the Twente region.

The campus is situated between Hengelo and Enschede and is the only campus university in the Netherlands. Staff and student flats and student halls of residence, sports facilities, shops and all faculty buildings are all located on a single site.

Although the university was originally a technical university, today also many non- technical courses are taught, such as Communication Studies, European Studies and Psychology. The UT is connected in the Federation 3TU with the Technical Universities of Eindhoven and Delft.

History

On 1 December 1961, the Dutch Parliament approved the creation of the third Institute of Technology in the Netherlands. Enschede was able to prevail as site against Alkmaar and Deventer. One of the main reasons for the choice was that the municipality of Enschede presented the estate Drienerlo for the set up as new campus university. One of the main objectives of the new university should be the training of new engineers for the industry in the East of the country.

The Birthday of the UT ( dies natalis ) is celebrated every year on the last Friday of November.

After the Parliament's decision was begun with the construction. On September 14, 1964, the Technical University of Twente ( THT) was officially opened by Queen Juliana and Prince Consort Bernhard. The first class consisted of 200 students, among them four women. The THT began the study with four operating divisions: General Science, Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering.

In its five years of existence in 1966 THT had 634 students, including only 14 women. A year later, the university has requested authorization for a medical school. However, the contract was awarded to the University of Maastricht. Over the years, more and more other new courses to come: Applied Mathematics, Physics and Industrial Engineering (1968 ), Management Science (1973 ), Applied Education ( 1977), Technical computer science (1980 ), Civil Engineering (1991 ), Applied communication science and business computer science ( 1993). In 1985, a "branch" founded in Leeuwarden Frisian, could put at the students their first year. Twenty years later, the " Vestiging Friesland " was closed again.

Your present name, the University of Twente since 1986.

In the summer of 2002, a fire raged in the former data center that an employee had to arson. A fire in large parts of the computer network of the University were destroyed, but within a few days of the damage could have been fixed provisionally. A year later, the building was re-opened.

Over the years, yet Telematics ( 1999), Biomedical Engineering and Industrial Design was born (2001), Psychology (2002), Technical Medicine and Health Sciences (2003), Advanced Technology (2004), European Studies (2006), Advanced Technology (2008 ) Creative Technology (2010) and the University College (2013 ) as degree programs added.

In September 2005, Pieter van Vollenhoven, a member of the royal family and husband of Princess Margriet, "Security Management" appointed professor in the department. Observers see this as a sign of the ever-growing positive image and good reputation of the university. The Twente Academy offers every summer to a Dutch language course for prospective students and a learning platform for math for the target group of students.
