University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna

The University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (short Vetmeduni Vienna, also University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna) is the only veterinary, academic education and research institution in Austria and at the same time the oldest in Germany. The University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, researches topics of animal health as well as on preventive veterinary medicine, public health and food safety areas. In research interests are creating a scientific basis for the well-being of animals, issues of animal husbandry, animal welfare and animal ethics. It was founded in 1765 as the oldest relevant school in German-speaking countries of Maria Theresa as a training school for the healing of livestock diseases. From 1795 it was listed as " Militair - Thierarzneyschule ". In the former building of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in Vienna Landstrasse district is now home to the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

The University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna has 1,200 employees and is currently training 2,300 students. The campus in Vienna Floridsdorf has five university hospitals and numerous research facilities. Two research institutes at the Vienna Wilhelmine mountain as well as a Teaching and Research in Lower Austria also part of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.

History

After the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna was connected 38 years at the University of Vienna, she was again placed under 1850-1920 to the War Department as a military veterinary medicinal Institute. Between 1897 and 1905 they introduced the name " K. uk military veterinary medicinal Institute and School of Veterinary Medicine. " 1905 Military Veterinary Academy was founded in Vienna, the University of Veterinary Medicine owes its independent development.

The right to grant the doctorate ( medicinae veterinariae ) was awarded in 1908.

Organization

The organizational structure is divided into five departments - which are in turn formed from hospitals and institutions - as well as three research institutes (Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology, Konrad Lorenz Institute for Ethology and the Messerli Research Institute ). The curriculum includes courses in addition to seven, six university courses as well as numerous training opportunities for veterinarians. On 16 September 2010 Hammer Sonja Schmid has taken office as the first Rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.
