The University of Zagreb (Croatian Sveučilište u Zagrebu, Latin Universitas Studiorum Zagrabiensis ) is a public university in the Croatian capital Zagreb with about 55,000 students (as of 2003). It is the largest and oldest university in the country. The University of Zagreb is a major research institution with a share of over 50 per cent of the country's higher education research. She is also a member of the network of Balkan universities.

History

Academy

A Jesuit Academy, the Neoacademia Zagrabiensis, was founded on September 23, 1669 by Emperor Leopold I, in his capacity as king of Croatia.

After the dissolution of the Jesuit Order by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, the Academy received a new structure ( including its extensive library). 1776 declared Empress Maria Theresa, the means for the Royal Academy of Sciences ( Academia Scientiarum Latin Regia ) with the faculties of philosophy, theology and law. The former political science subjects were part of the Faculty of Law.

University

This academy was maintained until 1874 in its structure substantially. In 1861 the Roman Catholic bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer proposed to the Croatian Parliament before the establishment of a University of Zagreb, including Emperor Franz Joseph I in the same year signed a decree and this was finally ratified by Parliament on 5 January 1874. The opening ceremony took place on 19 October 1874. The University was the third in the Hungarian part of the Empire to the Austro -Hungarian dual monarchy. Since then, over 200,000 students graduated and over 8,000 postdoctoral students have received their Ph.D. degree at the University of Zagreb.

On September 19, 2008 it was announced that on the Economy and Transport Faculty corrupt professors in a big way against payment forgave good exam grades and that the entrance test had to deal illegal. The police responded with 100 searches and 21 arrests. Those arrested included the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee of the Croatian Parliament, Deša Mlikotin Tomic.

International cooperation

The University of Zagreb has shown in their strategic documents " Iskorak 2001 " and " International mission and policy ," according to the will of an international collaboration. The Senate of the University of Zagreb adopted in Mai 2005 strategic plan shows what objectives will reach the university with this international cooperation. In May 2007, the Senate adopted a declaration that stimulates international exchange programs. In June 2007, a plan is created in which the exact tasks are shown.
