Urakami Cathedral

The Catholic Urakami Cathedral (Japanese浦 上 天主堂, Urakami Tenshudō ), St. Mary's Cathedral, located in the Japanese city of Nagasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture in Motoomachi district.

History

1895 began with the 1925 completed construction of the Urakami Cathedral.

Just 20 years later, it was almost completely destroyed by the atomic bombing on August 9, 1945 at 11:02 clock. The bomb missed the real target, the Mitsubishi works, a good two kilometers. The center of the explosion was only about 500 meters from the house of God. The after visiting the house of God haiku poet Mizuhara Shūōshi wrote to him regarding the bidding horror picture, the poem The sad, sacred ruins in the middle of the growing early summer.

1959 was started at the same place with the construction of a new cathedral. The remains of the original church stand as a memorial in the former center of the explosion.

Equipment

The organ was built in 1996 by the British organ builder Mander organ. It was dedicated to the 26 Martyrs of Nagasaki. The instrument has 52 registers on three manuals and pedal.
