Tent spider Uroctea Durandi

Uroctea Durandi is a native to the Mediterranean region from the spider family Oecobiidae that builds its network hanging under large stones. In Europe there are two species of the genus Uroctea.

Features

The adult females reach a body length up to 16 mm, the males are much smaller. Uroctea Durandi is mainly black in color and has yellow on the back body five points. This is a unique experience. The eight eyes are arranged on top of the head into two semi-circles from four eyes ( Fig. 2).

Biology

The marquees like disk network ( Fig. 3) being built hanging under rocks and camouflaged with small stones, needles, etc.. It shows in the adult animal about 4 cm in diameter and has six arched entrances. The bottom of the " tent " is composed of a web of carpet. At each opening lead two long signal threads. If one of these threads touched by a prey animal, the spider rushes out of the corresponding opening and take the loot. You will quickly wrapped in strands and then dragged into the living dream.

Eggs are laid in the living dream. The resulting hatched spiderlings are still holding there for some time, and are guarded by the mother.

Occurrence

The spider occurs in the Mediterranean region, mainly in forested areas, but also in sunny stony wastelands.
