The Bitter Herb sulfur cosmos ( Urospermum picroides ) is a species of the genus of sulfur cosmos ( Urospermum ) and thus the sunflower family ( Asteraceae).
Description
Urospermum picroides is a one-year stem - Therophyt, achieved the stature heights of 30 to 45 centimeters. The stem is erect, little branched and rauhaarig. The leaves are ovate -oblong, schrotsägeförmig, denticulate hard nut and half amplexicaul.
The perianth is ovoid. The bracts are single row, joined at the base, linear- lanceolate, acuminate hairy and bristly. The heads have a diameter up to 40 mm. The ray florets are bright yellow. The fruit beak is 6-8 millimeters long, thin, hollow, cylindrical and covered with short hairs. The pappus is white.
The flowering period extends from February to July.
The chromosome number is 2n = 10
Occurrence
Urospermum picroides occurs in the Mediterranean. The range extends from the Azores and North Africa to the Caucasus and on to Pakistan. As a neophyte but the species is also found in California, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile in South Africa in the provinces of Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu -Natal and the Western and Southern Australia before.
In Crete, the species grows in olive groves, phrygana dumps and waste places at altitudes 0-1300 meters.
