Urszula Dudziak

Urszula Dudziak ( born October 22, 1943 in Bielsko- Biała - Straconka ) is a Polish jazz singer.

Work

Dudziak first learned to play the piano in Poland in the 1950s. Radio broadcasts with the vocals of Ella Fitzgerald them motivated, even to sing. So they came to jazz. In 1965 she met the jazz violinist and saxophonist Michal Urbaniak know and sang in his jazz band. Later they married and went together to Sweden, where they lived 1965-1969. In 1974 she moved to the USA. Their daughter Mika Urbaniak is also a jazz singer today. After the political changes of 1989 Urszula Dudziak lives again in Europe.

In the United States refined the singer, who has a vocal range of four and a half octaves, her wordless vocal jazz. In 1976 she had her " electronified " scat on the Disco slice of papaya a hit. In 1979, she was selected by the Los Angeles Times for jazz singer of the year. In group " Vocal Summit " they collaborated with the singer Bobby McFerrin and singers such as Jeanne Lee, Jay Clayton and Lauren Newton. Another highlight of her career is the collaboration with Gil Evans in the 1980s; occurred during Umbria Jazz Festival in 1987, two live albums with the " Gil Evans Orchestra" with their distinctive improvisations. On the day before in Perugia recorded album Last session she sings in the background with Sting whose songs in arrangements by Gil Evans.

In addition, Urszula Dudziak was seven years singer of the fusion band Walk Away by Krzysztof Zawadzki. In this collaboration emerged four albums between 1987 and 1994. You also recorded with the Vienna Art Orchestra. She has worked with many giants of the international jazz, for example with Tomasz Stanko, Archie Shepp, Attila Zoller, Flora Purim, Larry Coryell and Lester Bowie. As a composer, she has worked among others for the New York Dance Company.

She is currently working among others in a duo The Electronic Choir with singer Jay Clayton.
