The USS Capodanno ( DE/FF-1093 ) was a frigate of the Knox class. She stood from 1973 to 1993 in service with the United States Navy. The ship was named after Navy Chaplain Vincent Robert Capodanno ( born February 13, 1929 in Richmond County, New York, † September 4, 1967 in Vietnam), which was founded in 1967 mortally wounded by a sniper and posthumously as second chaplain in the U.S. military history with the Medal of Honor was awarded.

History

The Capodanno was born on October 12, 1971 at Avondale Shipyards laid in New Orleans, Louisiana on Kiel. The launch took place on 21 October 1972 was commissioned into the Navy on 17 November 1973.

The frigate was placed under the Atlantic Fleet. Your first missions they carried into the Mediterranean in 1976 in the Middle East and in 1977 off the coast of South America. There, she participated in the UNITAS exercise for the first time. After five years of service, the Capodanno went public in 1978 for the first time at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine for overhaul into dock.

In 1979, after the work of the second Mediterranean deployment, in the summer of 1980, took the frigate to the " Teamwork 80 " NATO exercise in part, in 1981 followed by the second UNITAS maneuvers off South America. In November 1982, the third Mediterranean deployment began, the Capodanno was part of the multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon. After returning from this mission 1983 she was radically overhauled and modernized in Bath for the second time. The rest of 1984 spent the ship after completion of the work with exercises in the Caribbean.

In October 1985, the frigate then ran as part of the Battle Group of the Coral Sea again into the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, from where attacks against Libya have been made. After returning to the U.S. East Coast, the ship was overtaken briefly in Boston, then it remained to fire drills in the Caribbean. In September 1987, the Capodanno ran out to Norway, where she took part in " Ocean Safari 87 " NATO maneuvers on. End of February 1988, began the fifth Mediterranean deployment.

On 30 July 1993, the frigate was decommissioned, it still remained until January 11, 1995 in the register of ships of the Navy. On the day their decommissioning the ship was leased to Turkey, where it was placed as Muavenet (F -250) in service. The Turkish Navy acquired the ship on 22 February 2002 completely and uses it to this day.
