The USS City of Corpus Christi ( SSN -705 ) is a Los Angeles-class nuclear -powered submarine in the service of the United States Navy. It is named after the city of Corpus Christi, Texas. In order not to hurt religious feelings and to name a warship after the "body of Christ ", the ship's name "City of " has been pre- attached.

History

Construction

The City of Corpus Christi was commissioned in 1973 at Electric Boat and 1979 there Keel-laying. After 19 months in dry dock the boat was launched in early 1983 and was put into service after final finishing.

Missions

After first missions followed in 1998, a quick trip to the Mediterranean, where the City of Corpus Christi then led missions. In 1999, the boat participated in the UNITAS exercise and thereby to circumvent the South American continent. Following, from March 2000, was towed into the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in dry dock, where a refill of the reactor was carried out. Overhaul and modernization work was carried out also in just under 24 months. After the first trial runs followed by a second dockyard time in which additional modernization work was carried out until mid- August. The total cost for both working sections amounted to approximately 300 million U.S. dollars.

Following was moved to Guam, the Corpus Christi to Apra Harbor, where she drives patrols in the Pacific and Indian Ocean regularly. From there they took part in the exercise Valiant Shield 2006, among others.
