USS Iwo Jima

USS Iwo Jima is the name of three ships of the United States Navy to commemorate the battle for the island of Iwo Jima:

  • The first Iwo Jima (CV -46) should be an aircraft carrier Ticonderoga - class, its construction was, however, terminated with the war in August 1945.
  • The second Iwo Jima ( LPH -2) was the first specially designed amphibious assault ship in the Navy and the first ship of the class of the same name. She served from 1961 to 1993.
  • The third Iwo Jima (LHD- 7) is an amphibious assault ship of the Wasp class. It was put into service in 2001 and is currently in active service.
