Utersum

Utersum (Danish: Yttersum, Frisian: Ödersem ) is a municipality in the district of North Friesland Schleswig -Holstein. Hedehusum ( 56 inhabitants ) is a district of the municipality and was until 1969 an independent municipality.

Geography and transport

The place is located in the extreme southwest of the island of Foehr, within sight of Amrum and Sylt between dunes and pine grove, and is the smallest resort on Foehr. In Utersum is a rehabilitation clinic of the German Federal Pension Insurance, which specializes in lung diseases and areas of oncology and gynecology.

In the non- diked Godel lowland plants such as Salicornia and Aster beach can be seen. They live in salt marshes where the salinity of frequent flooding comes with seawater. Here are also the breeding sites of some species of seabirds such as Avocet.

History

A stone cist grave near the house of the guest already occupied a settlement in the Stone Age. The three surviving mounds, called Triibergem, evidence of a settlement in the Bronze Age. Near the village is the megalithic Sunberig.

As part of Westerland Foehr Utersum belonged to the royal enclaves and was the Kingdom of Denmark directly belonging, whereas the claimant country Foehr Wyk with the Duchy of Schleswig belonged. Only by Denmark's loss of Schleswig to Prussia came Utersum 1864 Schleswig -Holstein.

Utersum, Hedehusum and the neighboring community Witsum voted as the only municipalities in the second zone in the referendum in 1920 mainly in Denmark; because they were not right on the border later, but they remained in Germany.

1969 Hedehusum was incorporated into Utersum.

Policy

Municipal council

The voters Community FWU has been holding the local elections 2013, all nine seats in the municipal council.

Mayor

For the election period 2013-2018 Joachim Lorenzen ( TCT ) was elected as the new mayor. He replaces Juergen Schmidt, who led the office since 2003.

Tourism

In 2006 there were 11,969 registered guests with a total of 163 259 overnight stays.

Personalities

  • The entertainer Hans Rosenthal (1925-1987) is an honorary citizen of the community Utersum.
  • Hans- Hasso von Veltheim (1885-1956) spent his last years in Utersum.
