Val Badia

Alta Badia ( Italian and Ladin: Val Badia ) is located in South Tyrol ( Italy) and takes its name from the river Gader ( Ladin: La gran Ega, " the big water"), which runs through the valley. The Gader opens in St. Lorenzen in the Rienz. The name Abteital, which is sometimes used as a synonym for Val Badia, actually refers only to the most elevated part of the valley south of St. Leonhard (San Linert / San Leonardo). There is also the Alta Badia ski area with the Gran Risa.

History

It is believed that the Badia Valley was inhabited by a pre-Roman indigenous population. Alta Badia is considered Ladin heart. In the towns of Val Badia, the Ladin language and way of life has remained very much alive, as they were difficult to access because of the geographical remoteness long time.

In St. Martin in Thurn in Val Badia, the Ladin Museum is located at the Thurn and place in the Ladin Cultural Institute Micurà de beet. In this museum, according to one theory Lois Craffonara of the name " Gader " attributed to the Latin for Quadra square. Thus, the ancient Romans for rural settlements had a standardized Infrastructure Plan in the manner of a square, consisting of nine smaller squares. From archaeological finds, which are known from other locations, you can check whether about Sankt Martin in Thurn was originally built pursuant to such plan. According Craffonara you can see the individual paths or prominent points of Sankt Martin assign such a square pattern from a bird's perspective. The name "square" is said to have eventually spread to the whole Val Badia, hence the name " Gader ".

The Gadertalstraße

By Val Badia runs the Gadertalstraße ( Italian: Strada Statale 244 val della Badia ). It was built during the First World War by Russian prisoners of war. After former technique, the bridges over the Gader were kept as short as possible, so before and after the bridges are often almost perpendicular curves. Foreign bus drivers or truck drivers are not prepared, so that it occasionally comes to congestion, because two larger vehicles do not pass each other. So it was on June 6, 1993, a collision between an Italian coach and a car, causing the bus ran off the road and plunged 30 meters into the gorge. The roof of the bus was swept away by the fall in the Gader. 18 occupants died, 22 people were seriously injured. Meanwhile, the Gadertalstraße was expanded with many tunnels or galleries, in December 2006, the new route for the transport has been released. With the exception of the highest tunnel, the tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists on the old Gadertalstraße can be circumvented.
