Valday Iversky Monastery

The Iwerski Monastery (Russian Иверский монастырь / Iwerski monastyr ) is a Russian Orthodox monastery near the town of Valdai in the Novgorod Oblast (Russia). It is located on an island located in Waldaisee. His full name is Valdai Iwerski - Swjatoosjorski - Mother of God monastery ( Валдайский Иверский Святоозёрский Богородицкий мужской монастырь / Waldaiski Iwerski Swjatoosjorski Bogorodizki muschskoi monastyr ). The name refers to the established in the 13th century by Georgian monks Iviron ( also Russian Iwerski Monastery ) on Mount Athos in Greece ( Iweria is a historical term for a part of Georgia ).

History

The monastery was built in 1653 by Patriarch Nikon. This worked the first Russian province of printing. One of the main tasks of the monks was to translate books from old font in the Russian language.

In the year of the Russian Revolution of 1917 burned over 400 books of the monastery library. Courageous citizens in Valdai, however, brought a lot of books and art treasures to safety. The newly built home of the museum you can find a part of this unique testimony to a past time. 1927, the monastery was closed, the building used in the subsequent period as workshops, hospital, school, sanitarium and convalescent home. 1991 saw the return to the Church and reopened as a monastery.
