Valdemar III of Denmark

Waldemar III. (Danish: Valdemar III ) (* 1314, † 1364 ) was King of Denmark from 1326 to 1330. In the years 1325-1326 and 1330-1364 he was a Duke Valdemar V of Schleswig.

Waldemar III. was the son of Duke Eric II of Schleswig (son of Valdemar IV and grandson of Eric I ) and Adelheid of Holstein (daughter of Count Heinrich I of Holstein- Rendsburg ). He was married to Leonor of Portugal in 1229 ∞ (* 1211 - † May 13, 1231 ) (daughter of Alfonso II ), they had the following children:

  • Waldemar († 1360 ), Hereditary Prince of Schleswig
  • Heinrich ( † 1375 ), Duke of Schleswig

Waldemar was in 1326 raised by his uncle and guardian Gerhard the Great in place of Christopher II to the Danish king at the age of eleven years. Thus, Gerhard was practically the regent of Denmark. But he allowed himself to borrow from the minor King Valdemar the Duchy of Schleswig. Already in 1330 put Waldemar down the Danish Krone, since he could not defend himself against his enemies, the sons of Christopher II. Christopher II 's youngest son Valdemar IV Atterday followed the father to the throne after the murder of Gerard in 1340.
