Valeri Polyakov

Valeri Vladimirovich Polyakov (Russian Валерий Владимирович Поляков, scientific transliteration Valeri Polyakov Vladimirovič; * April 27, 1942 in Tula, Tula Oblast, Russian SFSR ) is a physician and former Soviet cosmonaut. He was born Valeri Ivanovich Korshunov and changed its name in 1957 after the adoption by his stepfather.

Space flights

Polyakov was selected for cosmonaut on 22 March 1972, the physician group 3. He took part in the two long-term missions Mir LD -2 and LD -4 and I spent this whole 678 days, 16 hours and 32 minutes in space. From his flight with Soyuz TM -18 to Mir space station, he returned to 437 days, 17 hours, 58 minutes and four seconds with Soyuz TM- 20 back (January 8, 1994 to March 22, 1995 ). He holds the world record for the longest continuous spaceflight. Unlike other long-term space travelers, he has performed a single spacewalk. In April 1995, Polyakov the award Hero of the Russian Federation was by a decree of the then Russian President, Boris Yeltsin awarded. On 1 June 1995 he retired from the cosmonaut program.

Polyakov is married and has one child.
