Valery Goborov

Valery Grigoryevich Goborow (Russian Валерий Григорьевич Гоборов, English transcription: Valery Grigoryevich Goborov; born January 20, 1966 in Kherson, † September 7, 1989 in Moscow) was a Soviet basketball player. He played on the position of the center and was a member of the Soviet national team at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Olympic champion.

Career

Valeri Goborow began playing basketball in a sports boarding school in Kiev. At first, he played at SKA Kiev. Even as a nineteen year old he came to CSKA Moscow. He was three times in succession from 1985 to 1987 Soviet vice-champion Zalgiris Kaunas behind and 1988 Soviet masters. At the European Championship 1987, he was appointed to the national team and won the silver medal there. His greatest triumph he celebrated in 1988 by winning the gold medal at the Seoul Olympics as a member of the Soviet national team, in which he, however, as the third center players got little use time. After Viktor Pankraschkin was not considered for reasons of age and Arvydas Sabonis no longer wanted to play for the Soviet Union, Goborow should be established as a new top- center of the Soviet Union. He was only once Bronzemedaiilengewinner at the European Championships in 1989. Goborow Two months later died in a car accident at the age of 23 years.
