Vamos (Greek Βάμος ( m. sg. ) ) Is a village (2011 ) 706 inhabitants in the west of Crete. It is located about 26 km south-east of Chania.

By 2010, Vamos was also an independent municipality since 1997, after several reorganizations as municipality ( dimos ), which housed about 3,000 inhabitants. On January 1, Vamos went up in de Apokoronas community in which it has since formed one of six municipal districts.

It was founded in the 12th century and was from 1867 to 1913 the capital of the province of Sfakia. In 1896 it was the scene of a revolt against the then Turkish rule in Crete. As of 1995, the city of some of the approximately 650 residents was renovated with the help of EU funds in order to preserve the traditional way of life and radiance of the city. In Vamos is a medical center ( Health Center Vamos ), which provides medical care to the surrounding villages. Vamos is the capital of the territory Apokoronas, which until 1997 formed a separate province.

To the municipality includes the villages of Vamos Douliana, Gavalochori, Agios Pavlos, Koprana, Agios Vasilios, Plaka, Almyrida, Kambia, Kokkino Horio, Kaina, Kefalas, Paleloni, Drapanos, Xerosterni, Litsarda, Sellia, Souri, Likotinara and Calamitsi Alexandrou.

Monastery Karidi

South of the town are the ruins of the monastery Vamos Karidi with the church of Ag. Georgios. The facility was originally a Venetian settlement, which was destroyed during the Ottoman rule. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the monastery belonged to his lands as a farm to the monastery of Ag. Triada at Akrotiri.
