Vanadzor
Vanadzor (Armenian Վանաձոր, Russian Ванадзор ) is the capital of the province of Lori. With 107 394 (2001) inhabitants, it is the third largest city of Armenia, Yerevan and Gyumri after.
In Vanadzor mainly chemical and engineering industries are represented.
Name
Until 1935 the city was known under the name Karakilis ( Ղարաքիլիսա, Каракилис ), this means in Turkish " Black Church ". Until 1828 there was in Vanadzor a Black Church, in its place in 1831 a new building was erected. After the death of Sergei Kirov, the city was renamed in his honor to Kirowakan ( Կիրովական, Кировакан ). After the independence of Armenia, the name was changed in Vanadzor.
The earthquake in 1988

On December 7, 1988, a major earthquake shook the Lori region in the north of the Armenian SSR, in which 25,000 people were killed. In addition to the town of Spitak, which was almost completely destroyed, and Kirowakan Leninakan were (now Gyumri ) severely damaged and many surrounding villages.
