Vangjush Mio

Vangjush million ( March 3, 1891 in Korçë, † December 30, 1957 in Tirana) was an Albanian painter. He was brother of the Albanian director and actor Sokrat million

Life and work

Mio was born in 1891 in Korçë. In 1908 he had moved for economic reasons with his brother to Bucharest. In the Romanian capital, he was active in the local Albanian artists' colony. In 1915, he began his art studies at the National School of Art Bucharest. In 1919 he completed his studies successfully, and in the same year he opened his first personal exhibition in Bucharest. In 1920 he returned for a few months back to his home and exhibited his works in Korçë from. This was also the first public exhibition of paintings throughout Albania. In September of the same year he went to Rome. As a great admirer of the Italian Impressionists of the 19th and early 20th century, million enrolled in the Royal Academy of San Luca. However, financial problems forced him to interrupt his studies and return to Korca. There he took a job as an art teacher in the French school, where he taught, among others, the later national leader Enver Hoxha.

In 1924, he successfully concluded on the basis of a state scholarship to Rome and his studies part thereof in the same year with the diploma. After that, he decided to spend the rest of his life in his birthplace Korca, which was considered at the time as the cultural capital of Albania.

During his life, he has participated in many exhibitions far albany, 1942 in Bari / Italy. His last exhibition organized by him, which formed a retrospective of his work was held in Tirana in November 1957. A few days later, on December 30, 1957 and died in Tirana million as a result of complications caused by jaundice.

Works

Vangjush million was the first Impressionist Albania. He was best known for his landscape paintings and is considered the best Albanian landscape painters of the 20th century. His favorite subjects were the cities of Korca, Pogradec and environment, but it also has other locations in Albania immortalized in his works such as Tirana, Elbasan, Himara, Berat and Gjirokastra.

Mio has a remarkable painter career behind him and was finished in 40 years, more than 400 drawings and 130 paintings. About 60 of his works can be admired in the National Art Gallery of Tirana. Other works of the artist are Vangjush million presented by his daughter Rozeta in his 2010 renovated house in Korca, the present museum. 1994 21 paintings were stolen there, which are still not shown up.

The Palace of Culture Korças was named after his name. Since 2007 in Korçë end of October, the Mio's Days Festival held in the four days of the artist's work is appreciated by painters from Germany and abroad. During these days the city and the surrounding area is an open studio and a template for the artist. On the last day of the festival the works created will be exhibited in the Palace of Culture.
