Vânia Fernandes

Vânia Fernandes ( born 1985 in Funchal, Madeira) is a Portuguese singer. She represented her native Portugal in 2008 at the Euro Vision Song Contest in Belgrade.

Biography

Vânia Fernandes was born the daughter of a mechanic and a seamstress on the Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira to the world. Her breakthrough celebrated the Portuguese in 2007 with their victory in the talent show Operação Triunfo. Between this success and their first music contest decade has been passed: 1997 Fernandes had at the Festival Funchal a Cantar, named after her hometown in Madeira, completed their debut appearance. During this time she kept changing between different genres. Her repertoire includes pop and rock songs mainly include fado and jazz titles. The fact that she has an exceptional and versatile voice, Fernandes was also certified by diploma: From 2001 to 2007, the 23- year-old studied at the Conservatory of Madeira vocals.

Euro Vision Song Contest

The 23- year-old singer won a landslide victory in the 44th edition of the Festival da Canção. Her song Senhora do mar received 17,650 votes - those were about 10,000 more than the runner-up Alex Smith with Obrigatório ter was able to record. Since Vânia Fernandes had qualified on 22 May 2008 from the ESC semi-final in the top ten, she took part in the May 24 final of the Euro Vision Song Contest 2008. There she finished the victory of the Russian Dima Bilan a 13th place.
