Varaždin

Varaždin [ ʋaraʒdi ː n] ( also Warasdin German, Hungarian Varasd, latin Varasdinum ) is a city in northern Croatia, located on the right bank of the Drava and has 46,946 inhabitants ( 2011).

The city is the economic and cultural center of northern Croatia, and the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Varaždin.

She was for a brief period, 1756-1776, the capital of Croatia. At the time of the Kingdom of Hungary and the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia was Varaždin county seat of Varasd.

Tourism

Varaždin is now one of the most visited tourist centers in northern Croatia, is adjacent to the capital Zagreb to the economically most developed part of Croatia.

The city offers numerous cultural and historical monuments and is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape. The old town of this very Central European influenced baroque town is very well preserved. The main attractions are the city center and the castle. Numerous museums, galleries and collections as well as a listed city cemetery are particularly attractive destinations.

One of the landmarks of Varaždin is the city guard. In their blue uniforms, the Grenadiers are present at all ceremonial occasions at City Hall.

Near the town are the well-known throughout Croatia thermal springs and the spa of Varaždinske Toplice. The baroque Old Town attracts many visitors. Since 1971, every year regularly find the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, one of the most important Croatian concerts instead. In addition, there is the International Wind Band Festival and in October the day book. Every summer, instead of the traditional Špancirfest Festival, occurring in the international performance, acrobats, magicians, actors, dancers, musicians, clowns and costumed in the Baroque style strollers in the streets of Varaždin.

The Varaždin Castle and the Varaždin cemetery are other attractions of the city.

Varaždin is today the administrative seat of Varaždin County.

In the operetta Countess Maritza by Emmerich Kálmán Varaždin is sung in a duet " Come with me by Varasdin ".

Economy

The largest employers in the city include the clothing manufacturer Varteks, food manufacturers and coca Vindija dd and the metal processing company MIV dd. More recently, a Free Trade Zone ( Zona Slobodna ) has emerged. In this currently settle on larger companies, especially from abroad.
