Varbitsa (town)

Warbiza ( Bulgarian Върбица ) is a city in the Oblast Shumen Bulgaria to the east with 3656 inhabitants ( 2008). Warbiza is also the seat of the municipality of the same name, the obshchina Warbiza ( Община Върбица ).

The city is located in the Danube plain at the foothills of the eastern Vorbalkans on both sides of the river Gerila.

History

The area was already inhabited in ancient times by the Thracians and Romans, Slavs and Bulgars arrived in the early Middle Ages. It is believed that the first ruler of the First Bulgarian Empire in the 7th century Asparuch Seweren in the area of Warbizapasses settled with the intention of catching the ball. At the pass, the Battle of the Warbiza Pass took place on 26 July 811, while the Krum's forces defeated the Byzantine army and the Emperor Nicephorus I killed and decapitated.

Presence

Most people now live by agriculture and logging, and by small businesses.

The city is ethnically and religiously diverse. In addition to the Turks and Pomaks there are Roma; except to Islam, the people confess to the Orthodox faith. Only slightly more than 15 percent of the population are ethnic Bulgarians.
