Vașcău

Vascau (Hungarian Vaskoh ) is a city in Bihor County in Romania.

Location

Vascau located in Crisana on Crisul Negru ( Black yelp ) - a swelling flow of yelp - in the valley floor Depresiunea Beiuş, on the eastern edge of the Codru - Moma Mountains. The county town of Oradea is located about 75 km north-west.

History

Vascau was first documented in 1552. It belonged to the sphere of influence of the Ottoman Empire. 1699 the place by the Peace of Karlowitz was a part of the Empire of Austria. As a result, in the region began an intensive mining, including iron ore. Furthermore existed until the 18th century gold rush. 1833 was a blast. After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 Vascau (then under his Hungarian name ) seat of a chair within the district of the Hungarian county of Bihar.

At the end of World War Vascau came to Romania. 1956, the town was declared a city. At this time took place in the region under Soviet supervision intensive uranium mining.

After the closure of uranium mines limestone and marble is mined today. Other important economic activities are the agriculture animal husbandry and metal processing.

Population

1880 lived in the present town of 2,570 people, including 2,395 Romanians, 151 Hungarians and 15 German. Of these, only 525 lived in Vascau, the others in the now incorporated towns. In 1956 the population maximum was reached with 4,538 inhabitants. As of the 2002 census lived in Vascau only 2,854 inhabitants, including 2,804 Romanians, 20 Roma and 15 German.

Traffic

Vascau is a leading endpoint of Holod railway line that allows you to connect to Oradea. From and after Holod currently operate (2009) four commuter trains. The track is from the private provider S. C. Regional S.R.L. served. By Vascau leads the European Route 79 There are bus connections to Oradea and Deva.
