Vasile Suciu

Vasile Suciu ( born January 13, 1873 in Copacel, county Fagaras, Transylvania, † January 25, 1935 in Blaj, Romania) was the Romanian Greek- Catholic Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Iulia.

Life

Vasile Suciu came from a peasant family attended elementary school and high school in his hometown Blaj. For his outstanding achievements in mathematics, he received a scholarship to study engineering at the Technical University of Budapest. But the call to the priesthood was stronger. He went to study theology at the Pontifical Greek College of St. Athanasius in Rome with connection studies at the Pontifical Urban University; there received his doctorate in theology. On 14 July 1895 he was ordained as a priest. In 1900 he became a professor at the Theological Institute in Blaj. He was Prefect and Librarian of the Library of the Archdiocese. In January 1918 he became a member of the cathedral chapter and vicar general of the Archdiocese.

On August 9, 1919, he was named Pope Benedict XV. Archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Iulia. He was consecrated and enthroned on 14 January 1920 in the Cathedral of Blaj. He was the first Metropolitan of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church in the United Kingdom Romania under King Ferdinand I of the House of Hohenzollern - Sigmaringen.

His particular concern was the education of young women. To this end, he founded the Congregaţia Surorilor Maicii Domnului ( Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady ), built - girl high schools whose principals took over the sisters.

He died on 25 January 1935, and was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Blaj.
