Vaskas complex is the common name of the iridium compound trans Chlorocarbonylbis (triphenylphosphine ) iridium (I). This square-planar diamagnetic complex consists of a central iridium atom are bound to the two triphenylphosphine ligands trans to one another. Furthermore, are still a chloride and a carbonyl ligand in the coordination sphere of the metal. About the complex first reported Di Luzio and Lauri Vaska in 1961. The complex has a lemon-yellow color.

Representation

Said compound is based on iridium ( III) chloride obtainable by heating in a high boiling solvent such as N, N-dimethylformamide in the presence of triphenylphosphine and a carbon monoxide atmosphere. Triphenylphosphine acts in the reaction both as reducing agent and as a ligand.

Alternatively, [ iridium ( Cl) (cod )] 2 ( cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene ) via addition of triphenylphosphine and subsequent treatment with carbon monoxide lead to the desired product.

Reactivity

Vaskas complex is known in particular for its ability to reversible oxidative addition of oxygen. In addition, hydrogen and hydrogen halides can be oxidatively added.
