Vassily Maximov

Vasily Maximov Maximowitsch (Russian Василий Максимович Максимов, scientific transliteration Vasily Maksimov Maksimovič; * 17 Januarjul / January 29 1844greg in Lopino near Novaya Ladoga, .. † 18 Novemberjul / December 1 1911greg in Saint Petersburg.. ) was a Russian painter.

Life

Maximov grew up in a peasant family. He was apprenticed an icon painter early on, where he learned the first steps in professional painting. In 1863 he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts as a guest student. His painting The Sick Child ( Больное дитя ) from 1864 was honored by the Academy. Two years later he left the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In Tver he was tutor.

A trip to the Volga joined in the subsequent period, during which he worked intensively with the lives of the people and the rural traditions in this region. During this time, his painting was Babuschkiny Skasky ( Бабушкины сказки ), which was acquired by Pavel Mikhailovich. Another work from this period was the arrival of the magician on the Peasant Wedding ( Приход колдуна на крестьянскую свадьбу ).

In the 1870s and 1880s he created a series of paintings that had the lives of the rural poor to content. He took his works participated in the first exhibition of the Peredvizhniki and in November 1872 was a member of this association. He died in 1911 in Saint Petersburg.

Unique in the history of Russian painting captures a Maximov a permanent place as a " historian " of the folk life of Russia.
