The Västergötland class diesel-electric submarines was placed at the service of the Swedish Navy in 1987. The four original units of this class, Västergötland ( in service 1987), Hälsingland (1988 ), Södermanland and Östergötland, were built 1983-1988 on the Kockums shipyard.

The latter two boats were subjected to additional retrofits in 2000 from the year: these include in particular a new section with AIP system of Stirling engines. A new air conditioner was installed as well as a lock for the use of special forces. They were then asked as Södermanland - class back into service.

The modernization of the boats were immediately aft of the tower cut apart and extended by inserting a new 12 m long section of 60 m. In the new section there are the new Stirling AIP system, liquid oxygen tanks and electrical generators. After modernization, the boats can now also be used in tropical waters. Previously, the boats were designed only for use in cold northern waters. Higher temperatures of the surrounding water could cause problems with increased internal temperature and increased condensation, because so far seawater was pumped to cool on board. Now the submarines are instead equipped with heat exchangers. In addition to improving the stealth characteristics of the boats also the board and weapon systems were brought up to the latest state of the art. With the Södermanland class, the Swedish Navy has now exclusively on submarines with air-independent propulsion.

Archer- class

The other two were to November 2005, placed in the reserve service before they were sold to the Navy of Singapore, the Republic of Singapore Navy ( RSN ). You will also be upgraded to the standard of Södermanland class and receive an additional air conditioning for service in tropical waters. The Defence Science and Technology Agency ( DSTA ) of Singapore and ST equipped the boats with addition of new mission control systems and fire control systems. The boats are 60.5 meters long and have a crew of 27 men. The training of RSN personnel began in 2007, and the Archer (ex Hälsingland ) met on 17 August 2011, at Changi Naval Base, where she was put into service on December 2, 2010. The Swordsman (ex Västergötland ) was taken at Changi on 31 December 2012 and is due to enter service in early 2013. They form the " 171 Squadron " ( Squadron ).
