Västerlånggatan

Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan are two streets in the old town of Gamla Stan in Stockholm.

Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan have long been the main streets of Gamla Stan. They followed the course of the first city - or rather defensive wall, which was invariably above the streets. They run in a north -south direction and meet the Järntorget (Iron market ) together. Both were mentioned in writing in the 15th century and were named 1444 Allmänningsgatan (Street of generality ) respectively Långa gatan ( Long Street ), sometimes with the addition of "west " and "east ". 1546 Västerlångatan is " Westra longgatun " and in 1558 named the Österlånggatan " Ostra long gatun ".

The buildings are now mainly of multi-storey, plastered stone houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. While the Österlånggatan touristy plays a more withdrawn role, the Gamla Stans Västerlånggatan is great shopping street with tourists adapted restaurants and souvenir shops.

On Friday, February 28, 1986 Olof Palme and his wife left his apartment around 20:30 Lisbeth in Västerlånggatan 31 and went to walk to the subway station Gamla Stan. He should not come back, because he was murdered on the same night at Sveavägen.
