Västervik

Västervik is a city in the Swedish province of Kalmar County, the historical province of Småland. Its nickname is the "Pearl of the East Coast " ( Swedish " Ostkustens pärla ").

The city has 21,140 inhabitants ( 2010) and especially in summer a popular destination for tourists. The largest employer in Västervik is the same community, whose main town is Västervik. Furthermore, the engineering and dye industries of importance and the newspaper Västerviks Tidningen here is relocating the team of resident Speedway Club runs in the top Swedish class.

Attractions

Västervik is known for its low fisherman's houses. Some of today's visitors have to duck when entering. Västervik is the starting point for a narrow gauge heritage railway to Hultsfred. The 70 km long journey via Ankarsrum through lake-rich landscape.

Built in 1997, the lookout tower, Unos torn, was built with the help of a donation of a dentist from the nearby Gamleby. The tower is now 18 meters high and allows a wide view of Västervik and the adjacent archipelago.

In the castle ruin of Stegeholm an annual song festival is performed.

In the near Västervik, the converter station of HVDC Gotland, the oldest commercial HVDC transmission system is at all.

Also located near Västervik Fårhultsmasten, a guyed mast for FM and TV, which is one of the four tallest structures in Sweden.
