Vasyl Lomachenko

Vasyl Anatolijowytsch Lomatschenko (Ukrainian Василь Анатолійович Ломаченко; born February 17, 1988 in Bilhorod - Dnistrovskyi, Odessa Oblast, Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian boxer. He was Olympic champion in 2008, 2009 World Champion and 2008 European champion at featherweight, and 2011 World Champion and 2012 Olympic champion at lightweight.

Career

Vasyl Lomatschenko was at the national level in 2004 Ukrainian cadet champion in the light flyweight, 2006 Ukrainian flyweight champion, 2008 and 2009 Ukrainian featherweight champion, and in 2010 and 2011 Ukrainian Champion in the lightweight.

In the 9th Cadet European Championships in September 2004 in Saratov, he won the gold medal in the light flyweight. He had thereby clearly prevailed in the final 34:12 against the Russians Farid Aleszkin. At the 14th World Youth Championships in September 2006 in Agadir, he also won the gold medal in the flyweight. He defeated it in the first round Derenik Gizhlaryan from Armenia and 34:14 in the second round Sergei Wodopjanow from Russia 37:17. In the quarterfinals, he beat each prematurely Andrew Selby of Wales in the semifinals and Rahim Najafov from Azerbaijan. Even his final bout, he won early against Cuban Albert Portuondo.

In November 2007 he was in Chicago, vice world champion at featherweight. After victories against the Puerto ricaner Abner Cotto ( 26:9 ), the Greek Theodoros Papazov ( 19:5 ), the White Russians Mikhail Bernadski ( 21:6 ), the Mexican Arturo Reyes (Co ) and the Chinese Li Yang ( 13: 13), he reached the finals. There, however, he was defeated by Russians Albert Selimow 11:16. So he automatically got a spot at featherweight at the 29th Summer Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing. He has already won the first round against his conqueror Albert Selimow 14:7 and then hit the bronze medalist of the 2004 Olympic Games Bohodirjon Sultanov of Uzbekistan clearly with 13:1. In the quarterfinals, he defeated again the Chinese Li Yang with 12:3 and moved into the semi-finals, where he defeated the Turks Yakup Kılıç 10:1. The subsequent final he won in the first round against prematurely Khedafi Djelkhir from France. Lomatschenko thus became only the second Olympic gold medalist for Ukraine in boxing after Wladimir Klitschko. In addition, he was awarded the Val Barker Cup as stylistically and technically the best boxers in the Olympics.

In November 2008 he launched yet featherweight at the 37th European Championships in Liverpool. Again, he was able to victories against Vladimir Nikiforov from Estonia ( 10:0 ), David Joyce of Ireland ( 10:2 ), Hicham Ziouti from France ( 2-1) and Araik Ambartsumow from Russia ( 7:1), the Gold Medal secure.

In November 2009 he won the 15th World Championships in Milan. He was restarted at featherweight and had Mario Aleksic from Bosnia 16:2, Craig Evans from Wales 15:1, Branimir Stankovic from Serbia 8:2, Óscar Valdez from Mexico and 12:1 in the final again Sergei Wodopjanow from Russia 12:1 beaten. At the 16th World Championships 2011 in Baku, he became world champion in the lightweight. He had prevailed in the preliminary rounds against Lomalita Moala of Tonga ( Ko) and the reigning U.S. champion Jose Ramirez (16:9) and defeated in the second round just under the Brazilian Robson Conceição ( 19:18 ). In the quarterfinals he won against the Uzbeks Fazliddin Gaibnazarow ( 18:10 ) and in the semi-final against Italian Domenico Valentino ( 17:11 ). In the final he defeated the Cubans Yasniel Toledo 17:12.

In the 30th Summer Olympic Games 2012 in London Lomatschenko defeated after a bye in the first round in the second round Wellington Arias of the Dominican Republic ( 15:3 ), in the quarterfinals Félix Verdejo from Puerto Rico ( 14:9 ) and in the semifinals Yasniel Toledo from Cuba ( 14:11 ). In the final he beat the South Koreans Han Soon- chul ( 19:9 ) and won his second Olympic gold medal.

In the 2012/2013 season Lomatschenko fought for the Ukrainian Otamans in the World Series of Boxing.
