The German Engineering Federation (VDMA ) is the trade association for the capital goods (machinery and equipment ). It represents about 3,000 mainly medium-sized member companies and is one of the most influential business associations in Germany.

History

The foundation stone for the VDMA laid the foundation of the Association of Rhine - Westphalian engineering institutions in Dusseldorf in 1890. Two years later, the Association of German engineering institutions ( VdMA ) was founded. In 1899, the Annual General Meeting decides to waive employer functions. 1916 enters the German Machine Tool Builders' Association ( VDW ) into the VdMA. Until 1918 the office moved from Dusseldorf to Berlin.

1934 adopting the Nazi regime the law to the " organic development of the German economy" and the Regulation on "Securing the Economic Group engineering " comes into force. After the war, first founded in 1945, the trade association engineering ( WVMA ). The following year, the club Bavarian engineering institutions ( VBMA ) are the Confederation of Engineering Institutions in United - Hesse ( WVMH ) and founded the engineering trade association in Berlin. On the establishment of the Association of German Associations of Mechanical Engineering Institutions ( AVDMA ) in 1947 following the 1949 re- establishment of the VDMA in Königstein im Taunus.

This is followed by the establishment of a liaison office in Bonn in 1950, the founding of the Society for the Promotion of machinery and plant mbH ( GzF ) and the engineering -Verlag GmbH (later VDMA Verlag) in 1951. 1954, the VDMA involved in the establishment of Europe Liaison Group of the European Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic and Metalworking Industries ( Orgalime ) in Brussels.

1966 pulls the VDMA headquarters in the Frankfurt district of Niederrad. In the following years a number of sub-organizations are founded: 1968 Forschungskuratorium engineering eV (FKM ), 1972 Documentation Engineering Association ( DOMA ) and German Engineering Institute ( DMI) today Maschinenbau -Institut GmbH (MBI ), 1979 Fachinformationszentrum technology.

The political and international contact will be further expanded with creation of liaison offices: 1972 in Brussels, in 1984 in Tokyo, Japan and in 1998 a new Berlin office. In 1980, the VDMA renames German association of machine-building institutions in the Association of German Machinery and Plant. The abbreviation VDMA remains the same.

The pulse Foundation is founded in 1992. 1998 following the establishment of the VDMA Association for the Promotion and Innovation Ltd. ( VFI).
