Veersemeer

Arose during the construction of the hedonist Gatdam

The Veersemeer (Dutch Veere, also: Veer Gat ) is a landlocked body of water that was created by the hedonist Gatdam 1961 as part of the Delta Plan. The Lake Veere is the northeastern boundary of the Walcheren peninsula. In addition, the Veer Lake separates the peninsula of Zuid- Beveland and the " former island " Noord- Beveland (now a peninsula ).

Before 1961 the Veere had a direct connection to the North Sea. The construction of the hedonist Gatdam and Zandkreekdam the east of the salinity of the water fell sharply and the Gat was brackish, with all the negative phenomena of life in and around water. After intervention of citizens' initiatives and mussel fishermen is initiated from the Oosterschelde salt water since May 2004. To this end, a controllable passage ( Siel ) was created in Zandkreekdam. At high water level ( tide) in the Oosterschelde oxygenated and saline North Sea water flows into Veersemeer, at low tide (ebb ) flows food -rich water from the Veersemeer back. Thus, the salinity at the Gat has risen again and the water quality was better.

In Lake Veere are thirteen smaller, uninhabited islands and sandbanks. Today, the inland waters especially with windsurfers and sailors is popular. On Veere Veere the eponymous town, which is very popular with water sports enthusiasts as well as for day-trippers is. Here, the channel opens through Walcheren in the Lake Veere. Other well-known resorts are Vrouwenpolder, located directly on the west ramp of the hedonist Gatdams, Wolpaartsdijk in the West Zuid- Beveland near the Zandkreekdams, and on the opposite side of the island of Noord -Beveland with the places Kortgene and Kamper country. The Lake Veere is on the waterway reached through the lock Zandkreegsluis in the final dam in the east.
