Vega Baja del Segura

The Vega Baja del Segura - German: Segura low level - is a local government district (called comarca ) of the Spanish province of Alicante in the Valencia region. It lies in the extreme south of the province of Alicante and is adjacent to the region of Murcia.

Their capital - at the same time its most historically important - is Orihuela. Orihuela is situated in the interior, orihuelaschen in the so-called garden and is the area 's largest city with 84 626 inhabitants of the comarca (INE 2008). The second most important town of Vega Baja is the coastal town of Torrevieja, with 103,540 has the most inhabitants of the comarca.

The Comarca is formed by 27 municipalities, which are divided into two judicial districts, the Orihuela and Torrevieja.

The geographical relief of the comarca is the level in the lower reaches of the river Segura river with its fertile gardens (so-called Huertas ) near the coast of the Costa Blanca. The Vega Baja is prone to earthquakes as a result of the encounter of European and African tectonic plates. On March 21, 1829 an earthquake of 6.6 degrees on the Richter scale causing 389 deaths and destroyed more than 2,000 buildings in different parts of the Vega Baja.
