Veijo Meri

Veijo Meri ( born December 31, 1928 in Viipuri, now Vyborg, now in Russia ) is considered one of the most famous Finnish writers of his generation.

Meris work is characterized by its to the extreme and absurd previous novels and short stories about war themes. In the foreground of his works are descriptions of people.

Life

Meri graduated high school in 1948 in Hämeenlinna, studied history and later became a freelance writer. From 1975 to 1980 he was professor of art, and in 1988 chairman of Suomen Kirjallisuuden Liitto.

Meri is, perhaps more clearly than any other Finnish writer, remained true to its own line; his style and structure took him far away from traditional Finnish prose flows.

His versatile work includes novels and short stories out, plays, poetry, essays and research. The Finnish translations of the wills of François Villon, Strindberg's champion Olavi and Shakespeare's Hamlet come from Meri.

On May 18, 1990 Veijo Meri was awarded an honorary doctorate in Political Science Faculty of the University of Helsinki. From the President of the Republic, he was awarded the title of Academician in 1998.

His books have been translated into 21 languages.
