Vein stripping

Stripping is the classical method for the surgical treatment of varicose veins ( varices ). It applies in saphenous veins varicose veins as the gold standard.

When stripping a flexible special probe is inserted into the pathologically enlarged vein, advanced to the end and discharged there again. The varix is then cut through the top and bottom, and is fixed on the probe, then when removing ( stripping) the varicose vein entrains changed under the skin. The stripping operation is carried out under general anesthesia, regional anesthesia or under local anesthesia; they can be inpatient or outpatient. That will depend on the severity of the lesion as well as the mental state of the patient. After the procedure is recommended and the prevention of thrombosis and embolism several days of anticoagulant treatment with heparin for 3 to 6 weeks, a compression with elastic bandages or compression stockings.

It can make itself again varicose veins after surgery. A study has shown that the formation of varicose veins is comparatively often due to technical errors in surgery. 64 percent of relapses occur accordingly by not completely removed saphenous veins residues.

A further complication is the lymph, since the operation is close to running at the remote venous lymphatic vessels may be injured and may thus lead to a swelling of the affected area up to a swelling of the entire limb.
