Vejle

The Vejlefjordbroen (Danish for " the Vejlefjordbrücke ") is a concrete girder bridge in the east of the Danish city of Vejle, which there crosses the fjord of the same name. On the four-lane highway bridge runs as part of the E45 " südjütische highway " ( Sønderjyske motorvej ), which runs from Skærup in the Municipality of Vejle to the German- Danish border at stalemate castle. With a width of 27.6 meters, the road can be expanded to six lanes. From the bridge there is the prospect Vejle Fjord, the city center of Vejle and the wave-shaped residential building complex Bølgen.

The bridge is 1710.15 meters long and is supported by two abutments and 16 reinforced concrete piers. The spans of the 17 openings amount to 67,90 meters, 14 × 110,00 meters, 68.75 meters and 33.5 meters. The prestressed concrete superstructure consists of a unicellular below 12.00 meters wide hollow box having a height of 3.00 meters and 6.00 meters in the box on the pillar. The design for the running bridge structure was created by the Danish engineering company Cowiconsult.

Due to its north-south orientation and its location in the subglacial the building is exposed to strong crosswinds from the west, so it must be closed during storms often.

History

After the traffic through the center of Vejle grew more and more since the 1960s, politicians and citizens demanded a solution to the traffic problems. Especially in summer formed across the city long queues on the former A10 main road ( A10 Hovedvej ). Basis for the construction of the bridge formed a decision of the Folketing, which provided for a highway from Kolding to Vejle. In November 1974 was followed by an international tender, which was the largest in the history of the Danish Road Office Vejdirektoratet. Contract was awarded to Vejlefjordkonsortiet in July 1975. The consortium consisted of the Danish construction company Monberg & Thorsen A / S and A. Jespersen & søn A / S as well as the German company Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG. Behind the bridge design were the architects Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard -Nielsen, who participated already in the New Little Belt Bridge.

After five years of construction, the Vejlefjordbroen was released on 20 June 1980 for traffic from Vejdirektoratet. About a week later, on 28 June, the " bridge march of the Red Cross " ( Røde Kors ' bromarch ) was organized in which around 160,000 people walked across the bridge. The Danish Queen Margrethe II consecrated the building finally officially on 1 July 1980.
