Velars-sur-Ouche

Velars -sur -Ouche is a commune in the Côte-d'Or department in the arrondissement of Dijon in the Burgundy region, with 1754 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Velars -sur -Ouche belongs to the Association of Local Authorities of the "Communes de la Vallée de l' Ouche ".

Geography

Velars -sur -Ouche is located about 10 kilometers west of Dijon. Through the town flows the Ouche and the Canal de Bourgogne.

History

Since the 16th century, a variety of craft and industrial establishments are in Velars been established: among other things, there was silverware, paper making, glass works, mills, brick-making, oil mills, mustard production. A bell foundry produced 1907-1909 over 300 bells, which made this known bell foundry.

In Velars two viaducts gained notoriety: On Viaduc de la Combe des Biches and the Viaduc de la Combe de Fain derailed trains in 1888 and 1962. The derailments are among the biggest disasters of the French railway history. A large part of the viaducts was destroyed in 1944 during the second world war by the Germans.

Attractions

  • Chapel ' Notre Dame d' Etang: Above the village is the chapel " Notre Dame d' Etang ", which is also the symbol of Velars -sur -Ouche. The chapel was built in the late 19th century on the site, found a small statue of Mary at the Shepherds 1435. Currently, the chapel is closed for renovations. There will be several annual pilgrimages to the chapel instead, Mother's Day and the first Sunday in July and in September. The statue of Mary in the chapel is 8 feet tall and weighs about 10 tons.
