Veľká Domaša

VeLka Domaša ( slovak: Vodná nádrž VeLka Domaša; German literally " Big Domaša Reservoir ", often just called Domaša ) is a reservoir in north eastern Slovakia. It is located in the sloping south Ondauer Bergland ( Ondavská Highlands ) and covers the districts of Stropkov and Vranov nad Topľou in the Prešov Region.

The lake was created 1962-1967 with the construction of the dam in the middle portion of the 146.5 km long river Ondava and the subsequent flooding. Primary function of the dam is flood control. In particular, in the time of snow melt and during prolonged rainfall in the catchment area of the Ondava and its tributaries south of the ridge of the Low Beskid Mountains, the river frequently appeared before the dam overflowed its banks and flooded fertile farmland in the East Slovakian level, as well as Bodrog and Tisza also areas in Hungary.

The water area is 14.2 to 15.1 km ² ( seasonally variable / different sources). He is after the Gabčíkovo Reservoir, the Orava reservoir, Zemplínska šírava and Liptauer reservoir to compare the fifth largest body of water in Slovakia and the surface after about the Upper Austrian Mondsee, Lake Sempach the Swiss or the Lower Saxony Dumber.

The reservoir VeLka Domaša is 14 km long and in the southern part up to four kilometers wide ( in the northern and central part between 500 and 1000 meters). The lake is 156 meters above sea level, the maximum depth is 32.5 meters.

For the construction of the dam the villages Dobra nad Ondavou, Trepec, Kelča, Valkov and Petejovce were completely or partially abandoned, the inhabitants of these places were resettled. For example, the village Nová Kelča of the dam in the 1960s came east again. Only the built in Baroque style in 1780 Catholic Church of the lost village Kelča is still in its old place, although below the lake level, with a semicircular scale dam around the church but in the dry. The reservoir is one of the most popular holiday regions of Slovakia. In summer, the clear water reaches temperatures of up to 23 ° C. In addition, the lake is a popular fishing waters. Among the fish species that occur in the Velka Domaša include mainly carp, pike, walleye, catfish and hazel.

At the lake there are six resorts: Dobra, Poľany and Valkov on the west bank, the communities Holčíkovce, Nová Kelča and Turany nad Ondavou on the eastern shore. Are here for the weekend or longer term stays numerous hotels, inns and campgrounds available. The reservoir is connected via the trunk road 15 that leads from Svidník to Vranov nad Topľou to the national road network.

A mile south of the dam the Ondava is dammed again. The 1500 meters long and 200 meters wide lake called Malá Domaša ( Small Domaša Reservoir ) and acts as a balancing reservoir. At this lake is the same Malá Domaša and the community Slovenská Kajna.
