Venice is a city in Sarasota County in the U.S. state of Florida with 20,748 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Venice is located on the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast of Florida. The town is located about 20 km south of Sarasota and 110 km south of Tampa.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 20,748 inhabitants distributed in 17 328 households. The population density was 879.2 &nbssp; inh. / Km ². 97.3 % of the population were white, 0.6 % African American, 0.1% Native American and 0.7 % Asian Americans. 0.5 % were members of other ethnic groups and 0.7 % of various ethnicities. 2.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 67.8 % of all households lived in 6.7 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 54.3 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 1.74 persons and the average family size was 2.24 persons.

6.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 6.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 18.8% were 40-59 years old and 68.7 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 68 years. 44.8 % of the population were male and 55.2 % female.

The average annual income was $ 46,646, while 8.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.95 % of the population and 4.05 % had a different mother tongue.

Shark teeth

Venice is also called the " Shark's Tooth Capital of The World " ( German shark tooth capital of the world ). During the annual Shark's Tooth Festival numerous exhibitions of fossilized shark teeth take place, which are to be found (especially in the Caspersen 's Beach, or at nearby beaches of Englewood ), or at the bottom of the ocean and on the beaches.

Venice and the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001

On 12 September 2001 the FBI stated in Venice investigations in connection with the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001. The investigation revealed that three of the terrorists involved, Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah Al- leading up to the attacks lived in Venice and had taken flying lessons there in the flight school Huffman Aviation at the Venice Municipal Airport.

Traffic

The city is crossed by Interstate 75 and on the Tamiami Trail ( U.S. 41 ). The Venice Municipal Airport is located 3 km south of the city center. The nearest international airport is Sarasota- Bradenton International Airport ( 35 km north ).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 171 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the low range. There were two murders, four robberies, 30 injuries, 87 burglaries, 466 thefts, 14 car thefts and one arson.
