Venlo–Eindhoven railway

The railway line Eindhoven - Venlo in the Netherlands combines the city of Venlo in Limburg with Eindhoven in North Brabant over a length of 52 kilometers. It is one of the busiest railway lines in the Netherlands.

The line was opened on 1 October 1866. In 1956, she was electrified.

History

1860 ordered the Dutch government to connect through an extensive rail network the Netherlands to the surrounding countries. The construction of ten so-called " Staatslijnen " is an essential part of this program. To connect Brabant / Limburg, Staatslijn E has been built between Breda and Maastricht. In contrast to other Staatslijnen line E consists of three sections.

The last section is built the route Eindhoven -Venlo. The railway was opened on 1 October 1866. In Venlo, the line following the opened last year stretch to Maastricht and at the same time to the line G in the German Viersen. In Eindhoven, the line has connection to stretch to Breda and in 1866 opened railway to Hasselt (B).

Six years later the route Buederich -Venlo was opened. The route is part of the ambitious " Paris - Hamburg railway". In 1883, the Maaslijn opened to Nijmegen. The section comes in Blerick on the line E. The railway line between Eindhoven and Venlo is up to this time the only rail link between Limburg and the rest of the Netherlands. In the following decades she is still the most important connection between Limburg and the rest of the country. For international rail transport is the line of great importance.

New developments in the 20th century

In 1913, the original route of the Staatslijnen was cut off by the construction of the railway line Eindhoven - Weert. In Weert it connects the new rail line to go to the Iron Rhine to Roermond. From now takes a significant part of the traffic between Limburg and the rest of the Netherlands take on this new connection. In addition, a number of trains running on the Maaslijn. The distance between Eindhoven and Venlo is now especially important for cross -border rail traffic.

Since the distance is less important for the national passenger, it took until 1956 until the web is electrified. This made it possible for international trains on the Dutch track with electric locomotives. Simultaneously with the electrification of the railway station of Venlo was moved. The new station is located closer to the city center. This was made possible by removing the route to Straelen. From Germany the electric driving is possible from the year 1968. Due to the differences in catenary voltage locomotive still needs to be changed. Since the summer of 1999 there is no cross-border long-distance trains more; only Venlo is still with the ending there RE 13 ( Euro rail ) is approached from Hamm -Hagen - Dusseldorf - Monchengladbach.

The distance between Helmond and Horst- Sevenum has a top speed of 160 km / h This option is only used for test drives. For the normal traffic of a speed of 140 km / h is provided.
